Must Have Tips for Working with a Professional Photographer

Working with a professional for property photography doesn't have to be difficult. With proper planning and a few handy tips, you can ensure you get exactly the images you need.

The first step is to look at the end game. It sounds counterintuitive, but I promise it works!

What’s the goal for the images? Are you simply documenting a property or crafting a story about it? Do you need detail shots or just the big picture? Will you need people in the photographs? Do you want those people to be staged or appear natural? Do you need to demonstrate things like scale or location?

It’s important to talk to your photographer about what you want to do with the photos so they can make sure to capture the elements and angles you need.

Sometimes you need to capture images of the same area from different angles to tell a story.

The next thing you want to think about is how you’ll be using the images. Will they be used for print or online (or both)? Do you need some images in portrait (vertical) orientation? Will you need negative space for ad copy?

Maybe you need all of those things…and that’s okay. Just remember that time is money. More images = higher cost. Multiple trips = higher cost. Much like sourcing material for a project, planning ahead is the most efficient (read: cost-effective) way to get the most bang for your buck.

Use the decisions you made above to compile a shot list. It’s a surefire way to make sure you capture the images you want. Think about what spaces you want photographed. Include your must-have shots as well as the shots you'd like to have if time allows. That way, you can be sure you get the images you need for your marketing efforts.

Planning a photo shoot takes some time up front, but it will be time well spent. Need some help? Download our free Property Shoot Planning Guide.
