The Difference a (time of) Day Makes

There are so many things to consider when planning architectural photography. The most important ones revolve around lighting – specifically what time of day your property will look its best.

The time of day can make a big difference in the photography quality. But that takes planning.

For exterior shots you might consider what direction the building is facing. Is the building in an open area or in a more crowded urban setting where shadows can come into play? Will a dramatic, early morning or late-afternoon warm glow make the building look awesome or is the building best photographed in full sunlight?

Capturing a Certain Look

Have you ever seen those interior architectural photos of an office with the dreamy blue windows and said “I want photos that look like THAT!”?

Well, those kinds of shots don’t happen at noon.

Actually, at this time of year those twilight shots happen either really early in the morning or really late in the evening. Those aren’t times people typically work, so it’s important to consider that when planning your photography.

That’s right, the time of day for ideal lighting may not coincide with the schedules of the people involved. Imagine that!

Other Things to Consider

Take an industrial building, for example. While the lighting may be ideal in the morning, there is also typically a lot of activity loading trucks and driving off for daily routes that can obscure the view of the building. If a building is occupied, you have to find a time when there’s less hustle and bustle to get the best results.

The good news is, an experienced architectural photographer can take the burden of figuring all of this stuff out off of your plate! When in doubt, a pre-session site tour may be the way to go, just to make sure there are no surprises.

In the end, the decisions about time of day are usually based on a combination of the factors above. How you plan to use the photos can often be the driver of what’s most important. It’s your photographer’s job to make your property look its best, no matter what time of day.
